The story
In the course of his more than 150 In the course of its long history, the “Schäfle” has seen a number of changes, and not just in terms of personnel. In 1899, it narrowly escaped a catastrophic fire in which almost the entire village center of Altenstadt burned down. Our house was spared in this fire. Unfortunately, on the night of March 11, 2005, it was not. Due to a smouldering fire, the Schäfle then had to be completely renovated inside and celebrated its reopening on 15.06.2006.

Purchase of the vineyard on the Ardetzenberg.

Edith Fulterer-Schwärzler is now co-owner together with with Heinz Otto.

Conversion of restaurant and renaming as country inn Schäfle. The hall and butcher’s shop are demolished.

Heinz Otto Fulterer is now the sole owner.

Heinz Otto Fulterer joins Josef and Stefanie.

Takeover by Josef and Stefanie Fulterer, née Marte, Schäfle, inn and butcher’s shop.

Antonia and Josef Fulterer take over, as Josef is only 19

Death of Franz Anton Fulterer and change of name to Gasthof Schäfle.

Andre Ludescher, landlord of the “Lamm” inn, as the “Schäfle” was the “Schäfle” was called at the time, set up his own brewery.
Until before the First World War, beer was brewed in the deep and cool cellar vaults. Today, the three basement floors serve a different purpose. A large selection of mainly Austrian wines is stored in the wine cellar and the “Ardetzenberger” matures in large barrels one floor below before being bottled.
The main house was renovated, converted and extended at regular intervals. In addition, in 1991 the shed on the opposite side of the parking lot, formerly used as a horse stable and storage room,
was replaced with a modern annexe with guest rooms. The guest garden, at the back of the restaurant in a quiet location, is considered a haven of comfort. Characterized by a rammed earth wall and several plane trees, it is many people’s favourite place in summer. Perhaps soon yours too.
